Throw More Hats

I get the privilege of helping analytics professionals advance their career and finding job that moves them forward to utilizing their full potential.  Most of my clients just want to be challenged, appreciated, and have a job that values what they provide.  So, what holds most people back?

It’s not their lack of skill set or because they aren’t qualified for a job they want to get.  It’s not because they are unable to apply to jobs or network with people who may be able to open a door.  It’s because they aren’t consistent in their work habit when it comes to applying for jobs.  They just simply aren’t applying to enough. They expect that a job offer will come their way but just throwing a few hats in the ring.  That’s not how it works.

Stay Consistent

Is it easy to look for jobs?  No!  It’s not easy, it’s not usually fun, but it is necessary if you actually want to change jobs.  The hardest thing to do is to get back into the habit of applying to jobs after stopping for a few days or weeks.  My best advice?  Don’t stop!

If you are looking for a new position and a change in your career, find a pace that allows you to CONSISTENTLY.  The ones that commit to a pace and stick with it for weeks or even months are the ones that I have seen land the job the fastest.  It’s not about applying to 10 jobs a day for 2 weeks and then getting burnt out.  It is about applying to 1-2 jobs a day for 30 days or maybe 3-5 jobs a week consistently.  Day after day, week after week.

That is a game changer. Why?  Because you change in the process.  You get wiser, more confident, more selective, and ultimately because you are putting of your hats into more rings and increasing your chances for success.

How to Stay Motivated

Here are three tips to help keep you motivated as you continue your job search:

  1. Remember Your Why – have a method to remind you every morning why you are searching for a new position and what a new job will do for you
  2. Decide to be Disciplined – you have to choose to do what you said you would do.  Deciding to do it is the first step
  3. Find the Right Fit – make sure your time spent applying is worthwhile.  Don’t just apply to any job, take the time to make sure that position is a right fit.
